All are invited to the third webinar in Washington & Lee University Library's 250th birthday year series highlighting W&L alumni who work in libraries or archives!

With over a million items, the Rare Book and Special Collections Division at the Library of Congress offers boundless opportunities for treasure-hunting. Curators within the division frequently plan displays for a wide range of groups visiting the Library, including college and high school classes, diplomatic embassies, civic organizations, and members of Congress and their guests. In this presentation, Patrick Hastings (Washington and Lee '05) will share highlights from his experience exploring the collections, contextualizing new acquisitions, and sharing discoveries with the world beyond our walls.

Patrick Hastings is Curator of Early American History in the Rare Books Division at the Library of Congress. He is the author of The Guide to James Joyce's Ulysses (2022) and the creator of ulyssesguide.com. Prior to joining the Library, he served as English Department Chair at Gilman School in Baltimore. Patrick haunted Payne Hall as a proud English major and wrote his honors thesis on the history of Shakespeare and Company Bookstore in Paris, where he lived and worked in the summer between his sophomore and junior years at W&L.

The W&L University Library was founded in March 1776, and we are celebrating our birthday for all of 2026.
