The DeLaney Center hosts DeLaney Dialogues, a series of lunchtime curated exchanges where an accomplished presenter offers stimulating insights about a topic linked to Southern race relations, culture, and politics. Our second event of this year, featuring DeLaney Center Postbaccalaureate Fellow Caitlyn Thompkins, will occur on Monday, March 23. As a preamble to this program, we invite you to a Reading Club Breakfast which will take place in The Gin Hotel’s banquet room located on the ground/lobby floor on Monday, March 23 from 8-9AM. The assignment for this session will be excerpts from two oral histories that Caitlyn collected. In these videos, Black residents of Rockbridge County discuss their experiences with the local healthcare system before and after medical desegregation. These interviews shed light on how community members made decisions about routine and specialty medical care in the mid-to-late 20th century. As we enjoy breakfast, we will talk about these clips seeking to learn more about the personal stories that animate realities in a rural and medically underserved area. Please join us for a lively exchange. For additional information about Caitlyn’s lunchtime presentation, visit https://my.wlu.edu/delaney-center.
